Python is a language real developers use, yet its clean syntax makes it a great starting point for kids too. With the right steps, a 10-year-old can write their own small game within a few weeks.
What age should they start?
For kids who read comfortably and can use a keyboard, ages 9-10 are a good start. Younger children benefit from building logic with block-based tools like Scratch, which makes the move to Python easier.
Is block coding required first?
Not required, but helpful. Block coding teaches loops, conditions and variables visually. Kids aged 11 and up can start straight with Python.
What should the first projects be?
- A number guessing game: variables, loops and conditions in one project.
- Drawing with Turtle: seeing code turn into shapes instantly boosts motivation.
- A simple chatbot: a great first step towards AI.
How can you help at home?
Ask your child to explain their project to you. A child who can explain their own code truly understands it. Normalise mistakes too: programmers spend much of their time debugging.
