3D printing lets kids hold an object they imagined within a few hours. Creality Ender and K series printers are among the most popular models in schools. Follow these five steps for a smooth first print.

1. Level the bed

Most failed prints come from bed levelling. Leave enough gap between nozzle and bed for a sheet of A4 paper to slide with slight friction. Even on models with auto levelling, check the first layer by eye.

2. Choose the right filament

PLA is best for beginners: low odour, prints at low temperature and suits a classroom.

3. Slice the model

Use Creality Print or Cura to turn the model into G-code the printer understands. For a first print, 0.2 mm layer height and 15-20% infill are a good start.

4. Watch the first layer

If the first layer sticks evenly to the bed, the print will most likely succeed. If it lifts, clean the bed and check the levelling again.

5. Don't forget safety

The nozzle goes above 200°C. Kids shouldn't touch the printer while it prints, and parts need time to cool afterwards.
